Martin Grütter was born in Trostberg/Germany in 1983. From 1999 to 2001 he studied composition with
Dieter Acker at the Academy of Music and Drama in Munich, subsequently he took up studies in mathematics and history of science at the University of Regensburg. From 2004 to 2009 he continued his studies in composition at the
Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin with
Hanspeter Kyburz, since 2010 in electronic music with
Wolfgang Heiniger. Besides he attended master classes e. g. with
Brian Ferneyhough and
Stefano Gervasoni.
Performances of his works took place at concerts and festivals in Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, and Hong Kong by musicians like
Ensemble Intercontemporain,
Ensemble Modern Akademie,
Thürmchen-Ensemble,
Ensemble Ligatura, Texture Ensemble,
Minguet-Quartett, as well as conductors
Peter Rundel,
Titus Engel, and
Alejo Perez. He was awarded several prizes, so in 1999 at the composition competition of the
Robert Schumann Society Dusseldorf, in 2007 at the composition competition
"In memoriam György Ligeti" and at the
Hanns Eisler Award for composition and interpretation of contemporary music, in 2010 at the international composition contest of the
MusikTriennale Cologne and at the
Mahler composition contest, Vienna. In 2008 he was finalist at the Tremplin Project of Ensemble Intercontemporain, Paris. He received scholarships by the Free State of Bavaria and the German Academic Exchange Service. Currently he is scholarship holder of the
Academy "Opera today" of Deutsche Bank Foundation (2010–12) and of the
International Ensemble Modern Academy (2011/12)
Martin Grütter's music deals with virtuosity, performance, irony, madness, rhythm, and speech. His compositions comprise solo, ensemble, and vocal pieces, music theatre and electronic music. In addition he is active as an piano and keyboard improviser. Martin Grütter lives and works in Berlin. |
